On January 27, 2006 Elders in Action joined the City of Portland, Portland Office of Transportation, Bicycle Transportation Alliance, TriMet, Willamette Pedestrian Coalition, Portland Police, and other community members at a PORTLAND SHARES THE ROAD rally at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. On a cold rainy morning Elders in Action volunteers: Betty Brislawn, Jim Duncan, and Bob Mandelson joined bicyclists, other pedestrians, elementary students on bikes, children in day care, transit riders, school bus riders, and motorists – all proclaiming that our public roads, sidewalks, and paths are for sharing. Whether a person chooses to travel by car, bicycle, foot or bus, their need for personal safety and their responsibility to be courteous to those around them do not change. Elders in Action will work with the City of Portland and other community partners to recommit to the principle that Portland Shares the Road. Some immediate actions are:
The City hopes that everyone will make it a point to walk, cycle, ride, and drive as an ambassador of safe and pleasant travel. Decals with the Portland Shares the Road logo and a message in bold print that "I SHARE THE ROAD" are available in the Portland Office of Transportation, 1120 SW Fifth Avenue, Suite 800. or http://www.isharetheroad.com/
