New Community Safety Advocate Volunteers Hit The Streets

Collaborative Community Project Between Portland Police, Office of Neighborhood Involvement, and Elders in Action

Twelve volunteers successfully completed three one-half days of training April 14 to become the first Community Safety Advocates for the collaborative community project with the Portland Police Bureau, the City of Portland's Office of Neighborhood Involvement and Elders in Action. The Police Bureau's Northeast Precinct graciously hosted the training in their community room.

Participants will be volunteering at neighborhood locations, many of which serve as police contact and crime prevention offices, providing referral services to citizens, assisting crime prevention staff and precincts with special projects, and contacting people who may have been victims of misdemeanor crimes to follow-up on the service they received and connect them with additional resources.

Volunteer locations include: The Southwest Community Center, Kenton Crime Prevention/Contact Office, Parkrose Contact Office, NE Precinct and the Elder Crimes Unit. Plans to staff additional offices at Eastport Plaza and Humboldt Gardens in NE Portland are scheduled for Summer 2008.

Plans for another volunteer training are being made tentatively for June. For more information and to reserve your space, please contact: Jennifer Lawrence – Program Coordinator at Elders in Action – (503) 595-7538, or (503) 235-5474.
