Community Safety Advocate Program
Up and Running In Four Locations!
Elders in Action, in partnership with the Portland Police Bureau and the City of Portland's Office of Neighborhood Involvement, has launched its new Community Safety Advocate program. The sites that are up and running are:
Multnomah Arts Center - SW
Elder Crime Unit - East
Parkrose Contact Office - NE
Kenton Contact Office - North
Volunteers are providing a wide variety of services including making telephone calls to victims of crime to offer additional resources, assisting citizens visiting contact offices with access to community information, and working with our partner agencies on special projects. Six new volunteers completed their training in June, making our total volunteer strength at 18!
Additional training sessions are being planned for late September. The training consists of three 3-hour sessions covering topics such as:
- Day in the life of a police officer
- Commonly asked questions by citizens visiting offices
- What to do in the case of an emergency
In addition, individual one-on-one training and orientation is done at each site to fully integrate the volunteer into the location. For more information about the Community Safety Program, and to sign up for the next training in September, please contact Jennifer Lawrence at (503) 595-7538.
