On January 26, Vote YES to Protect Seniors, Children, Schools, Health Care and Public Safety
Protect Vital Oregon Services
Vote YES on Measures 66 and 67
When times are at their toughest, Oregonians come together to make sure that those who need us most - Seniors, Children, Struggling Families - aren't left in the cold with nowhere to turn. This year that means working to pass Measures 66 and 67 in order to preserve critical funding for senior care and basic services that Oregonians depend on.
The Elders in Action Commission advocates for vital services that seniors need to remain at home, and thrive in our communities. We work to "ensure that quality of life never depends on age". Unfortunately without a YES vote on Measures 66 & 67 on January 26, 2010 the loss of funds will affect Oregonians because of their age, with seniors and children bearing the most devastating cuts. Senior and Disability Services are already preparing for losing 12-15% of their entire budget. Oregon Project Independence, the highly effective, cost saving program that allows thousands of seniors to remain in their own homes with minimal assistance faces elimination.
In short, raising the corporate minimum tax from $10 to $150 (Measure 67), and increasing (1.9%) the marginal tax rate the wealthy pay on their income above $250,000k after mortgage and medical deductions (Measure 66), is a smart solution that keeps Oregon from BIG problems.
As the December holidays approach, it's important to remember that this economic crisis is affecting families in every corner of the state. How we emerge from this recession is a test of who we are as Oregonians. Will we choose to protect vulnerable families, or will we choose to protect a $10 corporate tax that hasn't changed since the 1930s? This January, Measures 66 and 67 protect the critical services that struggling families need now more than ever.
