Elders in Action's 2007 Community Educator of the Year Bring His Voice and Wisdom to Africa
Robert came to Elders in Action in 2005 and has been involved in both our Personal Advocate and Community Educator programs. In 2007, Robert was awarded Community Educator of the Year for his expert service at local community events and helping consumers know how to avoid identity theft and fraud. He is a major advocate for Ride Wise program which reaches out to older adults and provides peer support on how to use the TriMet fixed route system.
Robert shares his knowledge in many ways. He is the Executive Director of the Physician Training Partnership and the director of its parent nonprofit corporation, Progressive Health Worldwide. Robert began his association with Africa as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Bahar Dar, Ethiopia (1965-67), completed his doctorate in African history and anthropology at Northwestern University (1978), and has taught African history and Asian and world geography courses at several universities.
Restricted access to primary medical care is a problem plaguing the billions of people living in developing nations. Access to specialized medical care is simply nonexistent for the vast majority due to a critical shortage of in-country professionals trained in these fields. While many organizations have focused on improving access to basic medical care, development of greatly needed specialized care has been largely neglected. Physician Training Partnership seeks to fill this critical gap in care by advancing specialized care through a focused, collaborative training program, enabling medical professionals of partner nations to independently improve the health of their own communities.
